Hainan province is China’s largest economic zone. Hainan Island is an international tourism island currently under construction, covering two-thirds of the ocean territory in China. This makes the place a large marine province and an important center for international travel.

Hainan leverages its convenient transportation system, wide diplomatic networks, as well as rich local culture as a strategic destination for health travel. As an important node of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, Hainan is using this advantage to fully demonstrate its excellence. Also, the opportunity of The Belt and Road Strategy offers Hainan a unique opportunity to accelerate its economic development by investing in the Tourism and Free Trade sectors.

Tourism has always been peculiar to the Hainan province. It attracts lots of international and domestic tourists who are attracted by its warm climate, unique folk and beautiful seawater. Leveraging the strategic opportunity of “The Belt and Road”, Hainan continues to promote the development of tourism and strengthen the business and trade relationships with Southeast Asian countries to boost its economy.

Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) is an important platform for Hainan international political relations. It is a nongovernmental and nonprofit international organization saddled with the responsibility of providing a high-end dialog platform for governments, enterprises, experts, and scholars to jointly discuss the economy, society, environment, and other relevant issues as it concerns the region.

Situated in the important node of South China Sea for international shipping, as the hub of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, Hainan province receives great support from the nation for the development of the health travel industry. Recently, the State Council approved the establishment of Boao Lecheng as an international pioneer medical tourism pilot, becoming the first international Medical Tourism Industrial Park approved by the State Council. With the construction of 14 high-quality medical facilities, it will have more international and domestic medical organizations which will serve as a Second Chapter for BFA. This will, no doubt, establish Hainan as a first class international medical tourism destination.

According to statistics from the Health and Family Planning Commission of Hainan Province, Hainan has achieved a high standard of economic and social development, as well as a high standard of living for its citizens. With the growing demands for healthcare, these factors provide a potential market for healthcare development in the province, with a domestic market of 1.3 million people and a strategic location right at the center of the Asia-Pacific Economic Ring.

Hainan attracts lots of high-end Health & Senior care organizations that desire to invest in the province’s healthcare industry. Citing these prevailing factors, experts predict that Hainan will catch up with choice health destinations, such as Switzerland, Thailand, and Singapore, in the future. There are also plans of establishing its “Healthy Island” and “Longevity Island” as a World Medical Tourism and Global Healthcare Paradise for both domestic and international health tourists.

Both the Provincial Party Committee and Government are focusing keenly on Health industrial development, with the creation of a 10-Year Plan which will see the development of healthcare projects in Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, including projects Health Management, Care and Rehabilitation, Medical Beauty and Anti-aging, etc. which will provide a complete chain of healthcare services to health tourists. This is aimed at establishing the pilot zone as a world-class medical tourism destination.
